Ryan Giggs “could face five years in jail” after assault and coercive control charge

Former Manchester United star Ryan Giggs could face five years in jail if found guilty of assaulting two women and coercive control.

The 47-year-old midfield player was first interviewed last November after an alleged “bust up” at his home with ex-girlfriend Kate Greville.

Now the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has confirmed the Welshman has been charged.

The Sun reports coercive or controlling behaviour carries a maximum five years in prison.

It is defined by law as:

“An act or a pattern of acts of assault, threats, humiliation and intimidation or other abuse that is used to harm, punish, or frighten a victim.”

Giggs said in a statement:

“I have full respect for the due process of law and understand the seriousness of the allegations.

“I will plead not guilty in court and look forward to clearing my name.”

The Crown Prosecution Service said:

“We have authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Ryan Giggs with engaging in behaviour which was controlling or coercive and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

“A charge of assault by beating relating to a second woman has also been authorised.

“The CPS made the decision to charge Mr Giggs after reviewing a file of evidence from Greater Manchester Police.

“Criminal proceedings are active, and nothing should be published that could jeopardise the defendant’s right to a fair trial.”

Giggs will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 28th April.
