The plot is not known but Oscar winning writer Julian Fellowes has been taken on the write the screenplay.

Lord Fellowes, 71, wrote the original Downtown film script.

Producer Gareth Neame said:

“After a very challenging year with so many of us separated from family and friends, it is a huge comfort to think that better times are ahead and that next Christmas we will be reunited with the much beloved characters of Downton Abbey.”

Downtown Abbey was a hugely successful television series that ran from 2010 to 2015.

It followed the up and downs of the Crawley family and their servants at the fictional estate.
