It gave the impression Mr Trump was urging demonstrators to march on the White House.

The BBC’s director-general, Tim Davie, and the broadcaster’s CEO (News), Deborah Turness have resigned from the corporation.

The BBC has confirmed receipt of the White House letter, which was first reported by its news channel.

It said it would respond to the president in “due course”.

BBC Chairman, Samir Shah, called the president a “litigious fellow”.

He added he was considering whether to make a personal apology.

The episode of Panorama was aired a week before the 2024 US election.

Michael Prescott, a former standards officer to the BBC, said the programme “completely misled” viewers.
