Flintham CC First XI went into this mid-table match missing key players.
Places were filled by several members making their debut in the senior squad.
Having won the toss, Flintham chose to bat as Hucknall 2nd XI duly took to the field.
Within six balls they’d snaffled three Flintham batsmen – all out without troubling the scorer.
Further down the order, another three also failed to get off the mark.
“Six players out for ducks is not a winning formula”, remarked one spectator.
Flintham’s opener James Taylor and keeper Matt Winn at number five, managed to steady the ship with a partnership of 89 runs before Taylor was caught.
Shortly afterwards Winn was also given out.
This brought in Sam Hawkins, who scored a solid 29 not out.
Apart from a brief cameo from Jack Playle, the tail did not wag – with three more batters not scoring.
Flintham scored 170 off 45 overs.
The total seemed eminently achievable for Hucknall
A solid start had them at 106 for four.
However, a few balls later they found themselves 110 for seven.
Whilst there were plenty of overs in which to score the required runs, the risk of losing wickets caused the batters to be more cautious.
They finally hit the winning runs in the 29th over.
Flintham bowler Spencer Taylor took five for 36 in his 10 overs.
Our man at the match added:
“Flintham were guilty of putting down catches.
“Had these been held, we might have had a much different result.”
