An Italian company has launched a bid to run Britain’s National Lottery.
Sisal made its surprise move against Camelot – which has run the lottery since it started in 1994.
Sisal operates Italy’s most popular lottery. Its bid is backed by investment firm CVC.
The charity Barnardo’s is also involved in the bid.
It will supply expertise in raising money for Britain’s “good causes”.
The licence to run the National Lottery is due for renewal in 2023 and will run for 10 years.
Francesco Durante, Sisal chief executive, said winning the UK draw was a “big aspiration”.
He added: “To run the National Lottery, knowledge of the UK market is paramount.”
Javed Khan, Barnado’s chief executive, said:
“Our involvement will strengthen the partnership’s focus on player protection and responsible play, whilst deepening understanding of the UK charity sector and how it works to make a difference in the heart of local communities.”
