Ryder Cup postponed until 2021 because of Covid-19 pandemic

The 2020 Ryder Cup has been postponed for a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Organisers felt the golf competition could not be held safely with spectators.

The match between America and Europe was due to be played in late September at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

It has now been re-scheduled for the same time in 2021.

Seth Waugh, head of PGA of America said:

“The spectators make it a unique and compelling event and playing without them was not a realistic option.

“It became clear that as of today, our medical experts and the public authorities in Wisconsin could not give us certainty that conducting an event responsibly with thousands of spectators in September would be possible.

“Given that uncertainty, we knew rescheduling was the right call.”
