After talks between captains and umpires, the Division A League South Notts League game against Plumtree second XI was trimmed to 45 overs.

Both teams occupy middle order places in the league.

It was a must win match for both

Flintham was put into bat.

After 13 overs the heavens predictably opened and play was stopped for an hour and fifty minutes.

The opening foray saw mixed fortunes for Max Pritchard and James Taylor.

Pritchard was trudging back to the pavilion in the second over, meanwhile Taylor stayed fast and rattled up 92 runs.

Taylor and Michael Playle put on a match winning 177-run partnership.

Flintham reached 226 runs for five in 30 overs before declaring.

A declaration meant Plumtree had to bat out 30 overs.

Flintham scorer B Anthony explained:

“Once play starts it is not possible to amend the number of overs to be bowled.

“However, a declaration by the batting side allows the game to be competitive.

“The bowling side are given the same number of overs faced by the side batting.”

“To win Plumtree needed 227 runs in 30 overs.”

Unfortunately, the Plumtree youngsters – with a mix of senior players – failed to kick-start their innings.

Only two batters made it into figures.

Wickets were taken by several Flintham bowlers.

Playle, Max Danby and Max Shenton had economy rates of two runs an over and they took five of the six         wickets between them.

They included two very sharp catches by wicket keeper Matt Winn off the bowling of Max Danby.

Albert Carter, the Plumtree Scorer, said:

“The young Plumtree players really held their own in this match – they were fearless.

“They have gained valuable experience from this game.

“It was pleasing to see that no allowances were made by Flintham’s bowlers, ensuring it was a genuinely competitive match.”
