Eighteen suspects shot and killed in shoot-out with South African police

Eighteen suspects have been shot and killed during a shoot-out with South African police.

The incident happened in Makhado in the country’s northernmost Limpopo province, according to a statement from the elite police unit The Hawks.

Police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe gave no more immediate information but local media reported that the 18 people who died were in a gang suspected of robbing armoured vans carrying cash for banks.

The shoot-out came after a tragic week in South Africa, in which at least 74 people died in a fire at an apartment complex in Johannesburg on Thursday.
