Former Manchester United and Netherlands goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar remains in a “stable but still concerning” condition after suffering bleeding around his brain.
The 52-year-old was admitted to intensive care on Friday.
A statement released on Saturday by football team Ajax, where the Dutchman was chief executive until he stepped down at the end of last season, said: “Edwin van der Sar will remain in intensive care for the time being.
“His condition is stable but still concerning. Ajax shares this information on behalf of Annemarie van der Sar, Edwin’s wife.
“The Van der Sar family, along with Ajax, is grateful and deeply touched by the many messages of support.”
Dutch media reported Van der Sar was on vacation in Croatia when he became ill.
During his career, he played for Ajax, Juventus and Manchester United – winning the Champions League with the latter in 2008 after a penalty shootout.
He appeared 130 times for the Netherlands and served more than a decade on the Ajax board.
