Court documents reveal that Brian Laundrie’s mother gave him “a garbage bag and a shovel” to dispose of the body if needed, as per a letter entitled “burn after reading”.
After a Florida court denied his parents’ request to keep the letter secret, Laundrie’s parents received the letter.
The Petitos are suing Laundries for emotional stress after their daughter died while they were traveling together.
After lawyers argued over whether the letter is relevant to the case, scheduled to be heard next May, it was released.
Gabby’s corpse was discovered in Wyoming’s Bridger-Teton National Forest, September 2021. Her death was ruled as homicide through manual strangulation.
The FBI claimed that Laundrie had written in a notebook, that he was the one responsible for her death.
In his backpack, he found a letter that said “burn after reading”.
NBC News received a copy of Roberta Laundrie’s letter from the Petito family lawyer.
“If you have to dispose of a dead body, I’ll be there with a garbage bag and a shovel”
She said, “I want you to know that I love you and will always be there for you.”
You are my son.
“Nothing will ever make me stop loving or hate you. No matter where we are, what we say, or what we do – no matter how we behave, we will always be in love with each other.
If you are in prison, I’ll bake a cake that has a file inside.
“If you have to dispose of a corpse, I’ll be there with a garbage bag and a shovel.”
“I will watch the sky for your return if you fly to the Moon.
The letter went on to say, “If you tell me you hate my guts I will get new guts.”
“Nothing can separate… even sin”
She ended her letter with a Bible verse taken from Romans. “Nothing can separate you and me: Not hatred, hunger, homelessness, threats, or even sin. ~ Not time. “Not miles, miles, and miles.”
In an affidavit Mrs Laundrie stated that she wrote the letter to her child at a “strained” time in their relationship, and gave it to him just before he left with Gabby for their trip.
She wrote: “I wanted to reconnect with Brian, and repair our relationship because he was about to leave the house. I hoped that this letter would remind Brian how much I love him.”
“While I used some words that seemed to be connected with Brian’s actions, and his taking Gabby’s live, I would never have imagined that the events that would unfold months later between Brian Gabby would reflect my words.”
Letter “in no way related” to Gabby
In a press release issued by her family’s attorney, Mrs Laundrie said: “The letter was written before Gabby and Brian left my home to go on their trip.
“I loved my son and wanted to tell him how much it meant to me. People use words and phrases to show their loved ones how much they care.
The letter had nothing to do with Gabby, even though I used words I thought Brian would find impactful given our relationship.
