After a two-month-long investigation, authorities foiled an elaborate plan to escape from prison by a multi-millionaire.
John Manchec’s plan included some of his employees as well as inmates that he had become friends with since being imprisoned in Florida for charges related to images of child sexual abuse.
Indian River County Sheriff Eric Flowers explained the plan by saying that Manchec would use a doctor visit to leave prison, while his accomplices pepper sprayed prison guards.
Then he would be taken to Fort Pierce to board his private aircraft, and fly to France where he has dual citizenship.
Manchec has already escaped to France before. After his arrest in 2014 on 49 charges, the US, he posted a bond for nearly $500,000 (PS402,000) and retreated to his medieval estate Chateau Pechrigal.
He was arrested in 2020 in the Dominican Republic, but France refused to extradite.
Sheriff Flowers stated that Manchec was scheduled for a medical visit in April, but someone who was aware of his escape plan informed authorities. This prompted an investigation.
Sheriff Flowers stated that the plan included Manchec’s yacht of 140 feet and other vehicles as well as the payment of bail for his cellmate, who lived at his house and assisted in making the arrangements. This included preparing a case and buying liquor.
Sheriff Flowers stated, “This is the real thing.”
Manchec remains in jail at Indian River County, but now with new charges related to his escape plan.
In addition, two inmates and his employees were also charged with conspiracy for the plan.
