Real Madrid star who spoke out against racist abuse reveals death threats

Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. has renewed his attacks on La Liga, and the Spanish authorities. He revealed that he had received death threats during this season.

Real Madrid has filed a complaint against Spanish prosecutors for a hate crime after the Brazilian footballer was abused during Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Valencia.

Valencia police say they have identified the fan who made racist gestures towards Vinicius. This person will be banned from entering Mestalla stadium for life.

In his most recent tweet, the 22 year old winger highlighted “continuous incidents spread across multiple cities in Spain”.

He wrote: “Every game away from home is a surprise.” There were a lot of them this season. All of them registered: death wishes, hanging dolls, criminal screams, etc.

“But, the speech is always based on isolated cases”, “a fan”. These are not isolated incidents. These are episodes that have been repeated in several Spanish cities (and in a TV programme).

The video is the proof. How many racists have their names and photos been exposed online? “I answer, to make it easy: zero.”

“Why do sponsors not charge La Liga?” he asked, adding that he was unsure what remained to be done in order to “punish these clubs” and “criminalise them”.

“The communication is no longer working and the problem is serious. You can’t blame me for criminal acts. You are not a football player, you are an inhuman.”

The match between Madrid and Valencia was stopped on Sunday evening after the break at half time as the Brazilian pointed to supporters who were taunting the referee.

Vinicius was furious after being racially insulted from the stands at Valencia’s Mestalla stadium. Team-mates and opponents tried to calm him down.

After the game, he tweeted: “It was not the first, second or third time.” La Liga is a place where racism is accepted. In football, they believe it is normal. The federation agrees. And the opposition encourages it.

“I feel so sad.” “I’m so sad.”

“A beautiful nation that welcomed me, and I love it, but agreed to export to the world the image of a country with racist views.

“I am sorry for those Spaniards that don’t agree, but in Brazil today, Spain is referred to as a racist country. Unfortunately, I don’t have a defence for what happens every week. I allowed it to happen.

“But I’m strong, and I will fight to the bitter end against racists.” Even if the race is far away.

La Liga not racist – president

Vinicius’ post from Sunday was a response to the La Liga president Javier Tebas, who accused the forward of “criticising” and “insulting” the league.

Tebas tweeted on Monday: “Neither Spain or @LaLiga is racist.” This is a very unfair statement.

“Attacks are hate crimes”

In a statement that was strongly worded, the club stated: “Real Madrid CF expresses its deepest revulsion at and condemns yesterday’s events against our player Vinicius Junior.

“These facts are a direct assault on our state of social and democratic law.

Real Madrid believes that these attacks are also hate crimes, and has therefore filed the complaint at the office of the Attorney General.
