In El Salvador, at least nine people were killed and scores more injured in a stampede that “smothered”.
Officials said that seven of the dead were men and two women.
Chaos broke out as fans pushed their way through the Monumental venue at Cuscatlan (about 25 miles northeast from the capital San Salvador).
The match was between Alianza and FAS, in the quarterfinals of the premier division.
The footage showed that dozens of fans rushed onto the field, in what a first-aid volunteer called an “avalanche”.
The member of Rescue Commandos said, “It was a avalanche that overran the gate.”
Some were still under the metal of the tunnel.
“Others made it to the stands, then onto the field where they were smothered.”
Carlos Fuentes added that “we can confirm nine deaths – seven men, and two women” and we treated more than 500 patients.
“More 100 patients were taken to hospital, some of which were in serious condition.”
The match was suspended after 16 minutes because some of the injured received medical attention on the field.
The Salvadoran Soccer Federation, the country’s equivalent to the FA, issued a statement in which it expressed regret for what happened and expressed support for the families of victims.
The police said that a criminal probe would be conducted in partnership with Attorney General’s Office.
