More than two weeks after their plane crashed into thick jungle, four indigenous children have been discovered alive in Colombia.
A 11-month old baby was saved, as were children as young as four and nine.
A Cessna 206 was carrying seven passengers when, in the early morning hours of May 1, it sent out a mayday due to an engine failure.
The President Gustavo Petro described the discovery as “a joy” for the country.
The impact killed three adults, including the Pilot. Their bodies were discovered inside the plane.
According to preliminary information provided by the Colombian Civil Aviation Authority, who coordinated the rescue effort, the children fled the plane, and then went into the rainforest in search of help.
Sniffer dogs had helped rescuers find discarded fruits that the children had eaten to survive. They also found shelters made from jungle vegetation and improvised shelters.
Rescue operations were carried out by both the army and airforce of Colombia, using helicopters and planes.
