Sanna Marina, the outgoing Prime Minister of Finland, announced that she and Markus Raikkonen (her husband for three years) are divorcing.
The , 37, who failed to win another term in office last month announced the news via Instagram stories on Tuesday.
“Together, we have filed for divorce.” The politician wrote: “We’re grateful for 19 years of marriage and our daughter.”
“We are still the best of friends, we’re close and we love each other as parents. We will continue to spend time with our family and each other in the future. Please respect our privacy. We will not comment on this further.
Emma Amalia Marin, a 5-year-old girl who lives with the couple since they met at age 18, is their daughter.
The couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony on August 20, 2020, while Ms Marin dealt with the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have grown up together as parents, having shared our childhood together and our adulthood,” Ms Marin said.
She was hailed as one of Europe’s young leaders for the way her cabinet handled the pandemic. Her prominent role, along with President Sauli Ninisto, in advocating Finland’s application for NATO membership has also been widely praised.
Conservatives have questioned her party’s position on the Finnish economy which was the main theme of the campaign.
She is stepping down from her position as PM after losing the April elections to the National Coalition Party, a centre-right party.
