In Rwanda, torrential rainfall has caused flooding that has killed at least 129 people.
The Rwanda Broadcasting Agency reported that the number of deaths “continues” to increase after heavy rains caused flooding and mudslides last week.
After more extreme weather during the night, search and rescue efforts are underway to find more victims.
According to records available from the past few years, the New Times newspaper backed by the government reported that “this could be the largest disaster-induced death count to have been recorded in the country within the shortest time period.”
Landslides are a risk in the rainy seasons due to the hilly terrain of the provinces in the west and north of the country, as well as the capital Kigali.
The Rwanda Meteorology Agency has forecast that more rain will be expected.
Three people drowned last week in flooding in Rukungiri district, Uganda, Rwanda’s neighbor.
Between January and April, 60 people died in weather-related catastrophes. Around 1,205 homes and 5,000 acres were destroyed across the country.
In the past the government asked residents of wetland zones to evacuate.
