This year’s Met Gala was a perfect opportunity for expecting celebrity mums and their babies to show off their growing baby bumps.
One of the most memorable moments was when tennis star Serena Williams, and model Karlie kloss announced their pregnancies publicly as they walked down the cream-red-blue carpet.
Met gala: the biggest night of fashion as it happened
Williams, 41, will be expecting her second baby with her husband Alexis Ohanian and Kloss is pregnant with her second child, Joshua Kushner, with Kloss.
Dress code for the event, held at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art was “In Honor of Karl”, which meant celebrities were inspired by late Chanel Designer Karl Lagerfeld.
The retired tennis star wore a black gown with silver edges designed by Gucci. She also wore multiple pearl strings around her neck, as well as a layered headband.
The couple proudly posed with her husband, who placed his hand on the stomach of the woman. Williams told reporters that there were “three” of them on the carpet.
Kloss, meanwhile, wore a dress designed by Northern Irish fashion designer Jonathan Anderson. Her black gown was adorned with the signature pearl strings of Lagerfeld.
She told Vogue: “I am so happy. This is the first time that I have shared my news. It’s very special.”
This is my first red carpet appearance and I feel vulnerable. I have no idea how to style the belly. “I can’t think of a more memorable moment.”
Rihanna rounded out the list of expectant mothers. She waited for over an hour to grace the carpet with a bridal-inspired outfit featuring Lagerfeld’s favorite flower, camellias.
The 35-year old singer is expecting a second child with ASAP Rocky who was also on the red carpet.
The singer said on the carpet of Entertainment Tonight that “[this pregnancy] is very different from my first.” She said, “I am enjoying this pregnancy, despite the nausea and cravings.”
Doja Cat, the singer, transformed herself into Lagerfeld’s pet cat Choupette by using prosthetics to cover her face and ears.
Florence Pugh debuted a newly shaved hairstyle, crowned by a black feathered crown. She revealed that she underwent the transformation to prepare for her upcoming movie, We Live In Time. The look was kept secret for three week prior to the dramatic reveal.
Anna Wintour, editor-in chief of Vogue and co-chair of the Met Gala, described it as “an emotional night” in her tribute to her best friend. She called Lagerfeld “the chicest designer you could ever imagine”.
