Police have confirmed that gunmen killed 10 family members in South Africa, seven of whom were women.
On Friday, a shooting occurred in Pietermaritzburg, a city in eastern KwaZulu Natal.
Early in the morning, police responded to reports of gunshots.
According to South African News24, police spokesperson Brigadier Jay Naicker said: “When they arrived on the scene they found that 10 members of a family had been shot and killed in one of the houses.”
He said that two gunmen are believed to have entered the house and started shooting at the family.
He added that “the motive for these killings is not known.”
Mabhungu mkhize, local councillor and SABC News reporter, said: “A family has been attacked while they slept.”

South Africa has a population around 60 million and has one of the highest murder rates in the world, with about 20,000 crimes recorded each year.
In January, eight people were killed by gunfire at a birthday celebration in Gqeberha on the coast of Eastern Cape Province.
Last year, a group of armed gunmen opened fire at customers in a bar located in the Johannesburg suburb of Soweto. 15 people were killed.
