The thieves who committed a heist in a Canadian airport reportedly made off with more than 1,630kg of gold, which is worth about PS84m (about $104m).
A secure facility was on site to hold the precious metal that was being transported through Toronto Pearson International Airport. This is the largest airport in the country.
Pearson is the place where gold mined in Canada is often stored before being flown overseas. Nearly half of all air cargo in the country passes through the airport.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police has been asked to help identify the perpetrators of the robbery. This robbery is only half the size of the Brinks Matt heist that took place in England in 1985, when 3,000kgs worth bullion was stolen.
The Toronto Sun reports that police suspect local organized criminal groups committed the robbery. It is most likely that a truck, given the size of the haul was used.

Heathrow Airport finds a plane with gold worth PS4m
Criminal gangs look to ports and airports for easy targets because they are always flooded with goods. The police believe criminal elements are at Pearson Airport.
Bloomberg quoted an RCMP spokesperson as saying: “We’re still trying to get accurate info on the heist.”
The thieves will have to figure out how to sell the gold they stole, whether the robbery is well-planned or an opportunistic job.
The Brinks Matt heist saw PS26m worth of gold and jewels stolen from a storage facility near Heathrow Airport. This is equivalent to PS93m at today’s prices. The robbers had to melt the gold in order to make money.
