A multi-storey parking lot collapsed in New York City, resulting in the death of one person and five injuries.
CBS News reported that emergency officials in New York said the second floor of a lower Manhattan parking garage collapsed onto the first.
CBS News cited video footage of the scene showing a rescue operation in progress.
The New York City Fire Department released a statement saying that firefighters who responded to the collapse had been pulled away from the immediate area “out of concern about the structural integrity of the building”.
The department stated that emergency personnel are doing everything they can to locate anyone trapped.
It said that all employees in the building had been counted.
Liam Gaeta said it felt like an earthquake. He is a student from the nearby Pace University. He described hearing “a loud noise, a big rumbling and we were all evacuated”.
Some Pace students reported hearing screams, and seeing cars fall into the building. It collapsed around 4pm.
The Fire Department reported that there had been reports of trapped people and searches were being carried out to ensure everyone was found.
The collapse occurred in the late afternoon on Ann Street. It is about a half-mile from the New York Stock Exchange.
The collapse was reported to Mayor Eric Adams, who is now on site to assess the damage.
