Meiwes was arrested for the murder of Bernd Juergen brandes in December 2002.

Meiwes recorded the murder on video.
He was sentenced to eight and half years of prison in 2004 for manslaughter. However, after an appeal from the prosecutors in 2006, he received a life term for murder following a retrial.
