Police have reported that an Indian couple committed suicide by using a homemade blade to cut off their heads as part of a sacrificial ceremony.
Vinchhiya Police said Hemubhai, Makwana (38), a farmer who is also his wife Hansaben (35) used the device between Saturday night to Sunday afternoon.
Indrajitsinh Jadeja, a Vinchiya sub-inspector of police, told the Hindustan Times that “the couple prepared a fire-altar before placing their heads under an apparatus similar to a guillotine held by a cord.”
He said: “It’s believed that they lifted the blades themselves, and then released the guillotine in a way that their heads fell down into a havan-kund”.
Havan kunds are traditional fire pits that can be used for rituals in which sacrifices are made to the gods.
The note asked parents to watch over their children aged 12 and 13 who had found their torsos when they returned home.
According to the Times of India, the note said that their deaths were also suicides and no one else was involved.
The newspaper reported that the children were sent to live with an uncle who is their maternal.
Mr Jadeja stated that the couple had been making daily prayers to Shiva, the Hindu deity of destruction, in a shrine built on their land.
The beheadings are being investigated to see if they were part of “black magic”. Mr Jadeja, however, said that he is not ruling anything out.
