Donald Trump accused Emmanuel Macron, the French President of “kissing Xi Jinping’s ass” during a recent visit to Beijing.
Last week, Mr Macron had discussions to meet with his Chinese counterpart in the hopes of persuading him to use his relationship to Russia’s Vladimir Putin for the end of the war in Ukraine.
Fox News asked the former president of the United States about his trip on Wednesday.
He stated, “You have this crazy world that is exploding and the United States has absolutely nothing to do with it.”
“And Macron, who is a friend of my, is over with China kissing [Xi]’s ass in China. “France is going to China?” I replied.
As his term in office wore on, Mr Trump had a more difficult relationship with Mr Macron.
A spokesperson for Elysee Palace described Trump’s remarks as “vulgar”
This comes after Macron was attacked for saying Europe shouldn’t get involved in any US-China conflict over Taiwan.
Reporters from Politico and Les Echos, the French president, said that Europe would fall into “crises not ours” if it was “trapped”.
He instead said that Europe should place its focus on “strategic independence”.
“Do Europeans have an interest in speeding up the discussion on Taiwan? No. “The worst thing would be to believe that Europeans must follow this topic and adapt themselves to an American rhythm, and a Chinese overreaction,” he said to journalists.
Backlash in the USA and Europe
Marco Rubio, a Republican senator from the US, tweeted that if Europe wanted to leave the diplomatic crisis over Taiwan, then the US should reconsider its support for peace in Europe.
He wrote, “Maybe we should just say that we will be focusing on Taiwan and the dangers China poses, while you handle Ukraine and Europe.”
One European MEP claimed that Macron speaks only for France and not the rest.
With Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Mr Macron traveled to China.
He said to Mr Xi that Russia’s aggression in Ukraine had caused a loss of international stability. You know that I can count upon you… to bring Russia back to its senses, and to bring everyone back to negotiations.
Macron stated that “We must find a lasting peace.” “I believe this is an important issue for China as it is for France or Europe.
While Mr Xi did not mention Russia or Ukraine, he said he was committed towards a relationship with France.
Trump gave praise to the Chinese leader in a Fox News interview.
He said, “President Xi (a brilliant man): If you searched all over Hollywood for someone to play the role President Xi’s role, you wouldn’t find him.”
Trump will be next in court for alleged hush funds to his 2016 campaign.
