According to the government, at least 44 people were killed in an attack on northern Burkina Faso by Islamic extremists.
According to Lt Col PF Rodolphe Sorgho (Governor of the Sahel Region), Jihadis launched “despicable, barbaric” attacks against the Tondobi and Kourakou villages in Seno province, on Thursday and Friday.
He stated that the government was stabilizing the area and urged people to keep calm.
Al Qaeda-linked Islamist groups have overrun the Sahel region of Burkina Faso, displacing 2 million people in six years.
It is unclear who carried out the attacks.
Fighting has divided and frustrated the population. In 2022, there were two military coups, each leader of a junta vowing to end the attacks.
However, violence has increased and spread as jihadis blockade village streets, stopping hundreds of thousands from moving freely.
IS claimed responsibility in February for the deaths of more than 70 soldiers and wounding dozens more. They also took five hostages in an ambush in northern Afghanistan on a military convoy.
Just weeks before, at least 32 people were killed by jihadis in multiple attacks across the country.
According to the United Nations, violence has caused the worst humanitarian crisis in country’s history. One in five citizens, or 4.7 million, are now in urgent need of humanitarian aid.
