Spanish actress, 68, has shared the story of how she used her son’s DNA to create a surrogate child – fulfilling his dying wish to have children.
Ana Obregon stated that Aless Lequio Garcia died from cancer in 2020. His sperm was kept with the intention to conceive a child with a surrogate mom.
The baby is her genetic grandchild, as the actress wasn’t directly involved.
Obregon said that the girl was not her daughter but she was actually my granddaughter to the Spanish magazine.!Hola!
She stated that doctors encouraged him to keep samples of his sperm before he started treatment. These were kept in New York.
She said, “It was Aless’ last wish to bring a baby into the world.”
!Hola! According to reports, the baby was conceived last June, when Aless would have been 30 years old. It was then born in March.
Obregon, who was once a star in The A-Team’s hit US series, had already prompted controversy by revealing she had used a surrogate mom to have a child.
Spain bans surrogate pregnancies, but children from such pregnancies can be registered in other countries.
Surrogacy has been referred to by leading politicians and Spanish media outlets as “womb renting”.
Irene Montero (Equality Minister) of the left-wing United We Can coalition partner has also called surrogate pregnancies “a form violence against women.”
On Wednesday, Margarita Robles, the Defence Minister, resisted criticizing Obregon. She said that although Spain’s law is clear, it was up to individuals to make their own decisions.
Popular Party, the main opposition conservative party, has stated that legalizing such pregnancies is possible if no payment is involved.
