After a tornado struck Little Rock, Arkansas on Friday afternoon, two people were killed and many others were injured.
Another tragedy occurred in Illinois when a Belvidere theatre roof collapsed. This was the result of another tornado that left 28 people hurt. The Midwest is still struggling with powerful and destructive storms.
The Apollo Theatre in Belvidere is approximately 70 miles northwest from Chicago, and the Apollo Theatre was hosting a heavy metal show.
The governor of Arkansas Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed that two people died in the twister along with other people believed to have been trapped in the destruction.
It also caused extensive destruction of homes, overturned vehicles and uprooted trees.
It is not known how many people were injured. The state saw approximately 90,000 customers experience power outages.
Frank Scott Jr., the mayor of Little Rock, stated on Twitter that he knew of 24 people who were admitted to Little Rock hospitals. He also said that he didn’t know of any deaths in Little Rock.
Separately, the Baptist Health Medical Centre in North Little Rock reported that it was treating 11 storm-related patients, one of which is in critical condition.
Other cities further from Little Rock also have reported mass destructions and injuries.
Richard Dennis, the chief of police in Wynne, about 100 miles east from Little Rock, stated that there was “total destruction” throughout Wynne, with many people trapped.
One of the many violent thunderstorms that battered the US’ south and Midwest regions – home of approximately 85 million people – caused the twister.
Other tornadoes have also been caused by the destructive storm system in Iowa. They have left behind hail in Illinois, and created wind-whipped grass fires for Oklahoma.
Oklahoma City residents were urged to evacuate to flee the flames.
Meteorologists forecast another round of severe storms in the same area next Tuesday.
As President Joe Biden was touring the aftermath of a second deadly tornado that hit Mississippi last week, the fatal tornado struck. It claimed the lives of at least 21 people, and caused damage to around 2,000 homes.
Governor Huckabee Bernie activated 100 members the Arkansas National Guard in response to the damage sustained throughout Arkansas.
“Praying for all who were and still remain in the path this storm,” Ms Hucakabee Bernie, who declared an emergency on Twitter, stated.
“Arkansans should continue to be weather aware as storms continue to move through.”
Niki Scott, a local woman from Little Rock, took refuge in her bathroom after her husband called her to warn her that a tornado was heading her way.
She could hear the glass breaking as the tornado passed, and she emerged to discover that her house wasn’t affected by a tree.
It’s exactly what everyone says. “It got really quiet, then got really loud,” Ms. Scott stated afterward as chainsaws roared in the area and sirens blared.
