Donald Trump was indicted for criminal charges stemming from an alleged hush-money payment to an actress in a film industry.
New York’s grand jury voted to indict Donald Trump for possible offenses related to a $130,000 payment (PS105,000), to Stormy Daniels in relation to the 2016 presidential campaign.
The deal was said to have been made in return for Daniels’ silence regarding an alleged sexual encounter she claimed she had with Trump a decade prior.
Even though he is attempting to retake White House in 2024, he is the first ex-US president to be charged with criminal offenses in court.
Trump, a Republican, claimed he was innocent and called the indictment political persecution. His lawyers said they would “vigorously combat” the indictment.

Manhattan District Attorney’s Office investigated allegations of money being paid to Daniels, and Karen McDougal (ex-Playboy model), who Trump allegedly feared would make public claims about extramarital sexual encounters.
Trump, at 76, denies having had affairs with any woman.
Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen claimed he coordinated with Trump regarding the payments to Daniels, real-name Stephanie Clifford, as well as to McDougal.
Cohen pleaded guilty in 2018 to campaign finance violations related to the payments. He was sentenced to more than one year in prison.
Federal prosecutors claimed that Cohen acted under Trump’s orders.
Trump stated that the Democrats had lied, cheated, and stolen in their obsession to “Get Trump” but now they have done the unthinkable: Indicting an innocent person for blatant election interference.
“This has never been done before in the history of our country.”
He said, “I believe that this witch-hunt would backfire massively upon Joe Biden.”

How Many Investigations is the Former US President facing?
Trump was expected surrender to authorities next Wednesday.
He denied any wrongdoing, and he has repeatedly attacked Alvin Bragg’s investigation.
His office spent almost five years investigating Trump, and the grand jury began hearing its evidence in January.
According to Mr Bragg’s spokesperson, prosecutors and Trump’s legal team are currently negotiating a surrender time when Trump would need to visit the New York district attorney’s office to have his fingerprints taken and photographs taken before he makes an initial court appearance.
Trump son injures
One of Trump’s sons Eric wrote on Twitter: “This third world prosecutorial misconduct.” It’s the opportunistic targeting a political opponent during a campaign year.
Trump called on his supporters to protest against authorities, if he is detained. There has been speculation that the ex-American leader would be indicted in recent weeks.
He released a lengthy statement in which he described the investigation as “political witch hunt” to remove the Republican Party’s leading candidate.
He said that he did nothing wrong, and then criticized a corrupt, depraved, and weaponized justice system.
Trump is also facing ongoing investigations in Georgia regarding election interference and federal investigations into his involvement in the insurrection at US Capitol on 6 January 2021.
