Madrid has been outraged by the revelation that a Spanish actress aged 68 has given birth to a child via an American surrogate.
Spanish media and political parties were captivated by Ana Obregon, a soap star. She was featured in the celebrity magazine!Hola! A front-page photo of her holding her baby in Miami was published by!Hola!
After it was revealed that Ms Obregon had used a Florida surrogate mother to have the child, the Socialist Party has now said it will investigate toughening the legislation.
Spain has banned surrogate pregnancies, but children born to such pregnancies from abroad can be registered.
The Socialists led left-leaning coalition government immediately condemned the news.
Irene Montero (Equality Minister) of the leftist United We Can coalition partner said that surrogate pregnancies are “a form violence against women”, while Maria Jesus Montero, Socialist Treasury Minister, described the practice as “exploitation a woman’s bodies.”
Surrogate pregnancies have not been a major issue in Spain for a while, but this election year may make it a hot topic.

UK couples could be legal parents to surrogate children at birth
The main opposition conservative party, Popular Party, surprised many when it announced that it would be open to discussing legalizing surrogacy provided no payment was involved.
Patxi Lopez, spokesperson for the Socialist Party Parliament, stated that legislation needs to be changed in order to prevent such cases.
Lopez stated that it was necessary to reverse the situation. Lopez said that anyone who wants to travel abroad to find ways to hire a woman to have children must be prevented. This must prevent them from being able to register their children in Spain in complete normalcy as if nothing has happened.
Obregon’s story seemed to be as controversial as the surrogacy issue.
Obregon is a biologist who was once well-known for her annual start-of-summer magazine photo shoot wearing a new bikini. On Wednesday, Obregon posted an Instagram message saying that “A light full-of love has shone upon my darkness.” I will never again be alone.”
Spanish media reported that the actress who appeared in an A-Team episode had just lost her son to cancer.
