Donald Trump claims he will be arrested for hush money payments made to Stormy Daniels, an adult film star.
According to the former US President, “illegal leaks” emanating from Manhattan’s district attorney’s office suggested that he would be arrested Tuesday.
Trump claimed that he was not informed directly of a pending arrest. He also did not provide any evidence.
According to NBC News, law enforcement agencies are preparing for a potential indictment against Donald Trump as soon as next week.
Manhattan’s district attorney’s office refused to comment on Trump’s claim, and a spokesperson for the former president didn’t respond when contacted.
Alvin Bragg, Manhattan District Attorney, is reportedly investigating whether payments made in 2016 to Stormy Daniels or Karen McDougal violated state laws.
Manhattan’s grand jury has heard from witnesses including Michael Cohen, a former Trump lawyer, who claims he orchestrated payments for the women to silence them over sexual encounters they claimed to have had with Mr Trump ten years earlier.
According to reports, Mr Bragg’s office is looking into the compensation Mr Trump received for Cohen’s work.
In 2018, Mr. Cohen was sentenced to three years for making payments.
He also pleaded guilty tax evasion, lying to Congress about the extent to which negotiations took place between Trump Organisation and a Moscow project to build a Trump Tower.
Cohen claimed that Mr Trump ordered him to pay $280,000 (PS230,000), to Stormy Daniels, and Karen McDougal, something which the former president denied.
