In Ecuador, at least 14 people died. A four-year-old girl died in Peru after a 6.8 magnitude earthquake.
According to the US Geological Survey, the quake was located 50 miles (80 km) from Guayaquil.
It was felt even further away in Peru, where Alberto Otarola (the country’s prime minister) said that a four year-old girl died from the effects of the roof on her home collapsing in the Tumbes area – near the border with Ecuador.
According to authorities, 14 people died in Ecuador while 126 more were injured.
Residents in Guayaquil, Ecuador’s second-largest city, reported that objects fell inside their homes during the earthquake.
Social media footage showed panicked residents running onto the streets.
Guillermo Lasso, Ecuador’s president, tweeted a message asking residents to remain calm. He then told reporters that the earthquake had “without doubt…generated alarm in the population”.
Two people died in Azuay’s highlands state from an emergency response agency called the Risk Management Secretariat.
One victim was a passenger in a car that had been trapped beneath a collapsed house.
According to the president’s office in El Oro, at least 14 people died in the state’s coastal state.
It is believed that around 20 schools and 30 health centers were also affected.
A number of people in Machala, an El Oro city, were trapped in a two-story house that collapsed. The pier was also destroyed.
On Saturday, Mr Lasso stated that he would travel to the area.
Downed power lines, which affected electricity and phone service, made rescue work more difficult.
Three TV presenters were filmed stepping out of their studios when the surrounding environment began to shake.
One presenter suggested that the show go to an advertisement break. Another repeated, “My God, My God!”
