China has criticized the US, UK, and Australia for their agreement to build new nuclear-powered submarines. They claim they have “gone further down an dangerous road”.
Rishi Sunak met US President Joe Biden in San Diego, and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to announce the next phase of the Aukus partnership.
As part of its efforts to counter Chinese activity in the Pacific Ocean, Australia will receive nuclear-powered submarines under the plan.
According to Reuters news agency, China’s foreign ministry stated that the three countries have “disregarded” international concerns.
When asked about the deal, Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for the company made these comments during a regular news briefing.
The three countries insist that the pact doesn’t increase the risk for nuclear proliferation.
The vessels will be equipped with conventional weapons, while the nuclear reactors will remain sealed.
Sunak stated that the UK, USA and Australia would collaborate to “keep our oceans clean” by launching a new generation nuclear-powered attack submarines.
The British prime minister stated that “for the first time ever, it’ll mean three fleets a submarines working together across the Atlantic and Pacific, keeping the oceans open, free, and prosperous for decades to follow.”
In 2021, the Aukus partnership was announced for the first time. The UK published an integrated review of its foreign and security policies in 2021. It highlights China’s “more assertive stance”.
Biden stated that the US could not ask for better partners than Australia and the UK when it comes to protecting the Pacific.
