What’s the Good Friday Agreement?

The Good Friday Agreement (GFA), was signed to end the conflict in Northern Ireland, also known as the Troubles. It was signed in the late 1960s. It was signed on April 10, 1998.

In Northern Ireland, a new government was created that represented both sides to encourage cooperation between the two communities.

What’s the Windsor Framework?

Brexit reshaped the political landscape, with Northern Ireland the only UK country with a border with an EU member – the Republic of Ireland.

According to both countries, a check at the border would disrupt GFA. Therefore, the controversial Northern Ireland Protocol was negotiated to avoid a hard border.

In an effort to resolve the issues raised by the protocol, the UK has ratified the Windsor Framework agreement with the EU.

Two lanes were created in the new post-Brexit agreement to reduce checks on goods entering Northern Ireland ports.

For products travelling through Northern Ireland to the Republic, which is part of the EU, a red lane will be used for all relevant customs controls. However, those sent to Northern Ireland only will use a green route.
