Following a series of videos about “sushi terrorist” posted online in Japan, three people were arrested.
Video clips showing customers pranking others in Japanese conveyor-belt sushi restaurants (known as kaitenzushi ) caused shares to plummet .
One video shows a man touching pieces of sushi intended for customers, while another shows him licking the top off a soy sauce container on a sushi train.
Others showed people adding wasabi to sushi made by customers and then licking a spoon from a green tea powder container.
According to the Kyodo news agency, three people belonging to the same diner group were arrested for allegedly obstruction of business.
According to the agency, these are the first arrests of customers suspected of engaging in “unhygienic or a form harassment” behavior.
Ryoga Yoshino (21), was arrested after he allegedly licked a communal bottle of soy sauce at a Kura Sushi restaurant located in Nagoya.
Police also arrested two minors, aged 19 and 15, who were allegedly involved in the 10-second online clip that captured the act. According to the Penal Code, it was obstruction of business.
The police stated that all suspects had admitted to their involvement.
Behavior’shakes the foundations of relationships with customers
According to SoraNews24, Kura Sushi stated that it appreciated the quick response by the police.
It stated in a statement that “such inconsiderate actions… shake the foundations of our relationship of trust with our customers. We sincerely hope that the public will be able to see that such actions are crimes and that it will stop others from engaging in similar behavior.”
