Mexico has been asked by the US to extradite Ovidio Guzman from Mexico, who is the son of Joaquin “El Chapo”, a notorious drug boss.
Two sources from Mexico told Reuters that the US wants Guzman, the younger, to be charged criminally in a US court.
The US has charged the 32-year old with conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine, cocaine and marijuana into the country.
In Mexico, he was detained near Culiacan, northern Sinaloa.
His arrest led to a wave violence that left at most 19 suspected gang members dead and 10 military personnel missing .
Mexican soldiers had attempted to arrest him in 2019, but his capture caused a huge influx of gunmen to Culiacan, forcing authorities back to their original positions.
After being shot 155 times in a nearby car park , the officer involved in the arrest was murdered.
These incidents showed the difficulty of cracking down drug cartels that control large swathes of Mexico.
Guzman’s father El Chapo was known as the Sinaloa drug cartel head before he was extradited from the US in 2017.
El Chapo was convicted in New York of 10 charges of drug trafficking and firearms laundering. He is currently being held in the US maximum security prison.
His 25-year tenure as the leader of Mexico’s Sinaloa cartel saw him go from being a small-time marijuana smuggler into the “largest drugtrafficking organization in the world… with thousands members”, US authorities stated at the time.
It brought in 154 tonnes of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine into the US. This earned El Chapo and his associates $14bn (PS11.6bn), he added.
