Counting the cost: This is how many civilians have lost their lives in the first year of the war

These are all common locations: a garage or sports hall, a nursery or farm building, and a bus stop. In the Ukraine, all of them were attacked within the past week.

Six people were killed waiting for a bus in Kherson. Two people were killed by shelling in Kharkiv.

After stepping on what is called a “petal mine”, a 55-year-old forestry worker in Izyum died.

Analyse by Sky News’ forensics team and data analysis confirms that there were 156 attacks within the past seven days.

Overall, 29 of the attacks resulted in injury or death: 25 civilians were killed and 55 were injured, though it is possible that this number is higher.

This makes it a pretty typical week at this stage in the war.

Although there have been many massed missile strikes that resulted in greater casualties, there is still a steady and consistent toll. No civilian is safe because the frontline covers the entire country.

Sky News’ Darka Hirna, an Ukrainian journalist who is based in Kyiv, said that it felt like winning a lotto.

One shelling attack cost her a friend.

“We feel really exhausted by this feeling. Every time we think, well, I could die, now or tomorrow. You think about death every single day.

The UN human rights office has confirmed this week that at least 8,006 civilians were killed in the conflict with Russia.

13287 people were injured, but the UN warns that this number is likely to rise significantly.

It means that on average, 22 civilians died each day and that 36 were injured over the course of a single year.

Although the first few weeks of war were the most deadly for civilians in the conflict, each month has a steady stream of deaths. There is still a possibility of a Russian offensive.

Data from the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project shows the locations where people were killed – the larger the circles, the greater the death toll.

It has a profound effect on the lives of those who are still alive.

Darka stated to Sky News, “It’s about daily deaths.”

It’s not about how you can live your normal life. The thing is, you end up realizing that your life is too boring to continue living in this history book.

“We are just exhausted by the entire situation and it’s really hard to keep fighting.

“But we don’t have any other option.”
