His representatives said that Jimmy Carter, former president of the United States, has chosen to go into hospice and spend his remaining time with his family.
The Carter Centre stated in a statement that the move follows brief hospital stays for the elderly.
The statement stated that Mr Carter, the US’s oldest former president, chose hospice care over “extra medical intervention”.
He also stated that he has the support of his family and medical team, and that they “ask for privacy at this point and are grateful for the concern shown him by many admirers”.
Recent years have seen Mr. Carter suffer from a variety of health problems, including a melanoma spread to his brain and liver.
Senior US politicians sent support messages to Carter following the announcement.
Georgia senator Reverend Raphael Warnock posted on Twitter: “President Jimmy Carter is a man with great faith who has walked alongside God. God is with Carter in this time of transition.
“May he and Rosalynn Carter, along with the Carter family, be comforted by that peace and surrounded in our love & prayers.”
Senator Chuck Schumer from New York said that he was praying for President Carter’s family.
When he defeated Gerald Ford, the former president of the United States, Mr Carter was a Democrat and became the 39th president of the United States.
He was elected for one term, but was defeated in 1980 by Republican Ronald Reagan.
After his term as president, Carter began to withdraw from electoral politics and instead opened The Carter Centre with Rosalynn (95), his ex-first lady. It celebrated its 40th anniversary last year.
The former president’s decades-long global advocacy for democracy and public health, as well as human rights, was paved by this centre. It is currently run by James Carter, the grandson of the couple.
James Carter posted a tweet on Saturday saying that he had seen his grandparents recently and wrote: “They are at ease and – like always – their house is full of love.
After having a liver mass removed in 2015, Carter stated that he was “perfectly at ease” with any situation.
“I have had an adventurous, exciting and rewarding life.”
