Guinness World Records has named the oldest dog in the world, a Portuguese 30-year-old dog.
Bobi was born 11 May 1992. He is the oldest living dog.
He is now 30 years old and 268 days. This certification comes just two weeks after Spike (a chihuahua hailing from Ohio, USA) was granted the title.
Bobi is a purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo. This breed is known for its ability to guard livestock and has a life expectancy of 12-14 years.
The Portuguese government’s pet database confirmed his birth date, as did Guinness World Records and the National Union of Veterinarians.
Bluey, an Australian cattle dog, was the oldest known dog. He was 29 years old and five months.
Bobi has spent his whole life in Conqueiros, a rural village in Leiria (Portugal), with the Costa family.
His three siblings were his parents. They had an outbuilding that they stored wood in. But, the family already had many animals so had to give the puppies up. Bobi fled, Leonel Costa, now 38.

Costa stated that Bobi’s longevity was due to the “calm and peaceful environment” in which he lives, far from the city, and his diet. Bobi has always eaten what we ate, he stated, noting that he has never been tied up or put on a leash.
He claimed that Bobi’s mother Gira lived until the age of 18 and that Chicote, another of their dogs, lived until the age 22.
“Bobi is special because it is like looking at him and remembering those who were part our family but unfortunately are no more here, like my dad, my brother or my grandparents who have left this world. Bobi is representative of those generations,” he said.
Bobi’s age has made his eyesight worse and he prefers to sit by the fire.
Guinness World Records stated that Bobi’s remarkable story includes being born to a condemned dog and becoming the oldest confirmed dog of all time.
