‘Unprecedented danger’: Doomsday Clock moves 10 seconds closer to midnight as Ukraine war rages

The Doomsday Clock was set at midnight, representing an “unprecedented threat” and was created largely due to Russia’s invasion in Ukraine.

It brings it closer to midnight, which is the closest it has been to global disaster. Since 2020 , it had been at for 100 seconds before midnight.

The countdown is a symbol for global collapse that world-renowned experts from the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists agreed upon.

They stated that Russia’s “thinly disguised threats to use nukes remind the world that an escalation in the conflict – whether by accident, intention, or miscalculation– is a grave risk.

“The likelihood that the conflict could spiral out of control is high.”

They also stated that the United States and Russia have yet to sign a nuclear weapons agreement.

They stated that unless the parties continue to negotiate and come up with a plan for further reductions, then the treaty will be canceled in February 2026.

“This would eliminate mutual inspectors, deepen mistrust and spur a nuke arms race. It also increases the possibility for a nuclear exchange.”

They also referred to China’s significant expansion of its nuclear capabilities, North Korea’s enhanced intermediate and long-range missile tests, Iran’s growing uranium enrichment capacity, and India’s increased arsenal development as “particularly troubling”.

The Climate Crisis, carbon dioxide emissions, increasing numbers of bio-threats such as COVID-19 and disinformation, all had an impact on the decision to speed up the clock.

“An alarm for all of humanity”

Mary Robinson, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and first female president of Ireland, stated: “The Doomsday Clock sounds an alarm for all of humanity.

“We are at the edge of a dangerous cliff. Our leaders aren’t acting fast enough or at the right scale to ensure a peaceful, sustainable planet.

We know what we need to do, from cutting carbon emissions to strengthening arms control agreements and investing in pandemic readiness.

“The science is clear but the political will is lacking. If we want to avoid catastrophe, this must change by 2023.

“We face multiple existential crises. Leaders must have a crisis mindset

The nearest the clock has ever been at midnight

Rachel Bronson is the president and CEO of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists. She stated: “We live in an age of unprecedented danger. The Doomsday Clock Time reflects that reality.

“90 seconds to midnight” is the nearest the clock has been set to midnight. This decision is one that our experts are not taking lightly.

“The US government, its NATO allies, and Ukraine have many channels for dialogue. We urge leaders to use all of them to reverse the clock.”

History and the clock

The Doomsday Clock was invented in 1947 by The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, who were experts in the Manhattan Project to build the first atomic weapon.

The clock was set up to show the Earth and humanity the danger posed by nuclear Armageddon.

It is an independent, non-profit organization run by some of world’s most renowned scientists.
