Germany ‘would not stand in the way’ if Poland decides to send tanks to Ukraine

Germany said that it wouldn’t object to Poland sending Leopard 2 battle tanks over to Ukraine.

LCI, a French television channel, posted clips of an interview she did with Annalena Baerbock, the foreign minister, on Sunday. She stated that her government has not been asked for approval by Warsaw but said that if they were, “we would not stand in their way.”

According to the Ukrainian government, it requires advanced tanks in order to defend itself against Russian invasion and war.

Berlin hesitated to sign off on the supply of German-made Leopards but agreed on Friday that it would review its stock.

Mateusz Morawiecki, the Polish prime minister, criticized Germany’s resistance to transferring Leopard tanks from Ukraine to his country. He said that even if Germany refused to transfer them, he was willing to create a smaller coalition of countries that would send them anyway.

Sending Ukraine tanks weakens UK forces

Vyacheslav Volodin (State Duma chairman) spoke Sunday at the lower Russian house of parliament. He said that supplies of offensive weapons to Kyiv’s regime would cause a global disaster.

“If Washington or NATO provide weapons that could be used to strike peaceful cities and attempt to seize our territory, it would trigger a retaliation using more powerful weapons.”

Germany is a major donor of weapons to Ukraine and ordered a review its Leopard 2 stock in preparation for a possible green signal.

Berlin’s government has been cautious in increasing its commitments towards Ukraine.

Emmanuel Macron, the French president, said that he doesn’t rule out sending Leclerc tanks to Ukraine, and asked his defense minister to “work on” this idea.

James Cleverly, UK Foreign Secretary, stated that he would prefer to see Ukrainians equipped with German-made tanks.

Only the UK, out of all the NATO allies has so far agreed to send tanks to Ukraine in the form 14 British Army Challenger 2s.

There were hopes that Germany would allow the liberation of its battle tanks. These could be available in much greater numbers.

At the end of Friday’s pledge conference at the US base in Ramstein (Germany), US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin stated: “I don’t have any announcements on M1s (US Abrams tank), and you heard Germany’s minister of defense say that they have not made a decision about Leopards.”
