Dani Alves, an ex-Barcelona defender, was arrested for sexual assault. She allegedly touched a woman’s underwear at a nightclub in Barcelona without her consent.
According to Reuters news agency, a spokesperson for the police said that the Brazilian World Cup star was taken into custody Friday morning. He will remain in custody until a court hearing later.
Alves is accused in touching a woman’s underwear at a Barcelona nightclub, 30 December.
The incident was reported to staff who alerted the police. The woman gave a statement.
On 2 January, she filed a formal complaint.
In an interview with Spanish TV station Antena 3, Alves earlier this month, Alves denied any inappropriate behavior.
He stated, “I was dancing and having fun without invading any person’s space.”
“I don’t know the name of this lady… How can I tell a woman that? No.”
Brazil’s second-most capped footballer, the 39-year-old has made 126 appearances for Brazil.
Alves lived almost a decade in Barcelona between 2008 and 2016, before moving to Juventus.
He has been a player for the Turin club and Paris Saint-Germain over the past five seasons, before returning to Barcelona in 2021 for a brief stint.
In July, he moved to Punas UNAM on the Mexican side.
