American footballer Damar Hamelin has been able to breathe on his own after a shocking on-field accident.
The Buffalo Bills released a statement Friday stating that their 24-year-old player’s neurologic function “remains intact” and that he “has been able to speak to his family members and care team.”
He also reported that he attended a FaceTime meeting with his team and said to them, “Love you boys.”
This news was four days after Hamlin‘s heart stopped twice when he fell to the ground and suffered a cardiac arrest during a game against Cincinnati Bengals.
He was still in critical condition at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center on Thursday.
The first time the player communicated was by writing. Later, he was able to grasp people’s hands.
Dr Timothy Pritts from the hospital said that “We know that it isn’t just that the lights are on, but that he’s at home.”
“It appears that all the cylinders within his brain are firing, which is very gratifying for us all.
He still needs to make significant progress, but this is a great turning point in his ongoing care.

On Monday, medical staff had to rush onto the field at Cincinnati to administer safety CPR to the Buffalo Bills for approximately 10 minutes. As the crowd became quiet, an ambulance drove onto the pitch. His teammates then huddled together to pray.
Two years ago, the football world was shocked by the Euro 2020 championship. The current player Christian Eriksen from Denmark also collapsed on the field.
