His team said that Damar Hamlin, an American footballer, suffered a heart attack in an NFL game. He is currently in intensive care and in critical condition.
Buffalo Bills tweeted “Damar Hamlin spent last evening in the ICU and remains there today, in critical condition at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
“We are grateful for all the support that we have received so far.”
This update was issued shortly after Hamlin’s family expressed their gratitude for Hamlin’s support during “this difficult time”. They also thanked Cincinnati’s first responders as well as hospital staff.
They stated that they were deeply touched by the kind words, prayers, and donations received from all corners of the country.
After being hurt during a match against Cincinnati Bengals, the defensive back, fell on the field and received CPR for approximately 10 minutes.
In the incident Monday night, he collided with Tee Higgins, a Bengals wide receiver.
He was able to stand up and adjust his helmet, before falling backwards and remaining motionless.
According to the Bills, his heart stopped just before his heartbeat was “restored” by medical staff.
He was apparently given oxygen after his football shirt was removed.
His family stated that they wanted to recognize the University of Cincinnati Medical Center’s dedicated first responders as well as the healthcare professionals who provided outstanding care to Damar.
“We are so grateful to be part the Buffalo Bills organization and to have their support. We want to also thank Coach (Zac), Taylor, and the Bengals team for all they have done.
Your kindness and compassion are a blessing to us. Keep Damar in your prayers. We will notify you as soon as possible with any updates.
During the incident Higgins led by his right shoulder and hit Hamlin in both the chest and the chest.
Hamlin wrapped his arms around Higgins shoulders and helmet to drag them down.
This episode led to an increase in donations to a charity campaign Hamlin started two years ago to buy toys for children in desperate need.
In less than 24 hours, donors have donated approximately $4m (PS3.3m).
While Hamlin was being transported to the hospital by an ambulance, Bills staff and players prayed together.
Fans gave him a standing ovation, and Roger Goodell, the NFL commissioner, announced that the game was postponed following the incident.
