Japan will offer families PS6,394 per child for relocation from Tokyo in an effort to reduce population concentration.
Japan’s government believes that a better balance between urban and rural residents will lead to a more prosperous economy.
Although the population has declined slightly in recent years, Tokyo’s metro area is still very densely populated with 37.1 million people – nearly a third of Japan’s total population.
According to media reports, this is a threefold increase in the 300,000 yen (PS1,918) per family for relocation families. The new incentive comes on top the maximum 3million Japanese yen (3PS19,188) in financial support base already available.
During the current fiscal year, approximately 1,300 municipalities participated in the relocation support program.
Families must reside in a participating municipality for a minimum of five years during their employment to be eligible for the benefits.
If they leave the property in the required time, they will be asked for a refund.
Japan is taking steps to address the growing problems of an ageing population.
According to data from the government and cited by local media, more than 15% of the population was over-75s in the country last year.
