According to the club, Cristiano Ronaldo has signed with Saudi Arabian team Al-Nassr FC.
After leaving Manchester United last week, the 37-year old joins for a two-and a half-year contract.
This was following an explosive television interview where the forward stated that he felt betrayed and didn’t respect Erik ten Hag, their Dutch manager.
Ronaldo is said to be on an Al-Nassr deal worth PS177m per year, which is the largest in football history.
Al-Nassr posted a statement on Instagram: “This is more that history in the making.”
“This signing will inspire our club to achieve greater success, but also inspire our nation, boys, and future generations to be the best versions of themselves,”
Ronaldo will undergo a medical in Mrsool Park (the modern home of Al-Nassr), before completing formalities. He will then be revealed to the fans wearing the yellow and blue colours of the club in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital.
“I’m eager to try a new league of football in another country.” Ronaldo was quoted by Al-Nassr Club as saying that Ronaldo’s vision was “very inspiring”.
The signing is likely to be a huge boost for Middle Eastern football. However, it will fuel debates about Saudi Arabia’s use of “sportswashing”, which is meant to improve the country’s image abroad.
He scored in Portugal’s first group match against Ghana, his 118th goal for Qatar, and was then dropped from the starting line-up for the knockout rounds. The team lost 1-0 to Morocco in the quarter-finals.
