Local media reported that about 10 people were feared to be buried in an avalanche in Western Austria.
According to the Austrian Press Agency (APA), the disaster occurred at 3:00pm local time on a Tritkopf mountain face between Lech and Zurs. The snow that had been released fell as far as the nearby ski runs.
The search team and several helicopters quickly raced to the spot near Lech, a luxury ski resort in the Arlberg region.
It said that one person was saved.
“We are doing all we can to save the winter sports lovers,” APA quoted Lech’s municipality as saying.
Around 200 people joined the rescue effort to assist in the search. Rescuers requested flashlights so they could go on in the darkness.
There are many types of avalanches. However, they can be triggered by weather conditions and temperature changes or by people who disturb unstable snow.
According to the APA, the avalanche occurred after days of snow in high alpine regions and unseasonably warm Christmas Day weather, citing local police.
The snowboard and ski resorts of the Arlberg region, western Austria, are well-known.
