Zelenskyy on his way to US to meet Biden – his first trip outside Ukraine since start of war

Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he is currently on his way to America, where he will meet President Joe Biden.

This highly sensitive trip marks Ukraine’s first visit to Ukraine since the invasion of Russia on 24 February.

On Twitter, Mr Zelenskyy stated that he was going to the USA to “strengthen resistance and defense capabilities” for his country.

He stated that he would discuss cooperation between Ukraine and the USA and added: “I will also give a speech to the Congress and have several bilateral meetings.”

According to a senior US official, Mr Zelenskyy will be meeting Mr Biden today. He is part of the US president’s national defense team.

The official said that Mr Biden will convey to Mr Zelenskyy that “we will stand by Ukraine for as long as necessary”.

The commander-in-chief of America will likely announce that he will send Patriot surface to-air missiles to Ukraine in order to repel Russia’s invasion. Additionally, the US will instruct the Ukrainian army in a third nation on how to use them.

According to US officials, they will also receive precision-guided bombs as part of military assistance worth $1.8bn (PS1.48bn).

In the meantime, US politicians will vote on a year end spending package that includes around $45bn (PS37bn), in emergency assistance for Ukraine.

To seal the deal for long-term support, a highly symbolic trip

There is also the symbolism.

Take a look at the pictures of the Ukrainian president who has the freedom to travel and address influential friends on Capitol Hill. They also have the opportunity to make a deal for long-term support and the use of state-of the-art weaponry.

It will be the perfect picture to celebrate Ukraine’s resilience and US support. It’s also timely for the two presidents to touch base.

Both will have noticed that the US lobby opposes continuing support for Ukraine.

Opinion polls show growing scepticism. This is echoed loudly by some members of the Republican Party, which will control the House of Representatives in New Year.

The Biden-Zelenskyy deal and the meeting it sealed pre-empts any political complications neither man wants.

The long-term strategic benefits of a weak Russia and a United States that is more assertive in its leadership are the big selling points for Mr Biden.

He also believes in any future peace agreement that favors the Ukrainian side, which is his side in this conflict.

They will discuss big money and high-stakes investments when Mr Biden meets with Mr Zelenskyy.

This funding would be the largest American infusion of aid to Ukraine. It will surpass President Biden’s $37bn emergency request (PS30bn). It will also ensure that funding flows to the war effort over the coming months.

Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives, earlier stated that Wednesday’s session of Congress would have a “very special emphasis on democracy”.

During Russia’s invasion, Mr Zelenskyy addressed several parliaments and international organizations via video. He also sent his wife to foreign capitals to ask for help.

Zelenskyy states that he believes Russia should be held responsible

His office released a video in which Mr Zelenskyy was shown holding a Ukrainian flag. He also hinted that he might deliver it to US leaders.

Mr Zelenskyy stated that the guys gave us our beautiful Ukrainian flag along with their signatures to transmit it.

“We aren’t in an easy position. Our enemy is expanding its army and our people need stronger weapons. We will transmit it from the boys to Congress to the president of United States. It is not enough. We are grateful for their support. It is just a hint that it is not enough.
