After a powerful earthquake in northern California, at least two people were injured. Tens of thousands of homes had been left without power.
The “insane” 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Tuesday at 2.34am (11.34am UK Time). Its epicentre was just offshore the coast, and it was about 10 miles (16.km deep). However, there was no tsunami danger.
Residents reported that there was shaking for as long as 20 seconds.
The earthquake occurred near Ferndale, Humboldt County.
According to the US Geological Survey, more than a dozen smaller earthquakes were reported to have struck the area afterward.
The major earthquake caused extensive damage to roads, homes, and bridges. Power lines were also downed, and there were many gas leaks.
Ferndale is 261 miles (420km north of San Francisco) and home to approximately 1,400 people.
According to the sheriff’s office, one person fractured their hip while another sustained a head injury.
According to Poweroutageus.com, 72,000 households and businesses were without power in this area and other parts of the county.
The California highway patrol responded to reports that the Ferndale bridge was cracked over the Eel River.

Ferndale resident Caroline Titus tweeted a video of her darkened home, where she had smashed dishes and furniture that was on the verge of falling apart.
“Our home is an 140-year-old Victorian. She tweeted, “The north-south shaking was very evident in the what fell.”
She said, “That was a huge one,” in a different message.
Jimmy Eller, another Twitter user, said that he was from Humboldt County and wrote “That earthquake is insane.” It was a good 15-20 second shaking.
The sheriff’s office also tweeted: “Due a large earthquake. Widespread damages to roads, homes are reported throughout Humboldt County.
Prepare for aftershocks. Make sure to inspect gas and water lines for damage or leaks. Travellers should exercise caution.
