Millions of Argentinians collectively breathed a collective sigh after their dramatic World Cup win – and then they let loose in Buenos Aires to celebrate.
Maradona was the hero when South Americans brought the trophy home for the last time in 1986.
It was Lionel Messi’s turn after 36 years.
The World Cup finalist scored two goals in normal and extra time. He also won the penalty shootout.
Millions upon millions of Argentines cried, yelled, and hugged each other as they followed the game – most chanting their captain’s name.
The man many consider the greatest player in the world did not disappoint.
Celebrations continued throughout the night in the capital as well as in cities and towns all over the country.
After drawing 3-3 in extra time , Argentina defeated defending champions France 4-2. This was in front of an 88,000 strong crowd in Qatar.
However, Kylian Mbappe’s late brace saw the game enter extra-time.
Argentina was once again in control thanks to Messi, but Mbappe scored another penalty to complete a remarkable hat-trick. Argentina finished 3-3 and entered the dreaded penalty shootout.
It was to be Argentina and Messi, as Gonzalo Montel won the spot-kick.
Messi won the trophy and was named player of the tournament.
Outside the Lusail Stadium, Qatar, celebrations continued with the Argentina team displaying the trophy on an open top bus.
French fans were disappointed. President Emmanuel Macron tweeted: “Congratulations France team for its career, its combativeness at this World Cup.
“You have delighted the nation and all of your supporters across the globe. Bravo to Argentina for their victory.
