‘So good to be home’: Brittney Griner leaves medical centre and plans WNBA return

Brittney Griner, a US basketball player, has been released by a Texas medical center. She made her first public comments since her release from a Russian penal colony.

According to CNN, Griner, was released in a prisoner exchange with Viktor Bout who was convicted of selling Russian arms. She stayed at Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas eight days after her return to the United States.

In an Instagram post, the 32-year old said that she plans to return to basketball and play in this season’s Women’s National Basketball Association.

She stated, “It feels so great to be home!” It has been a difficult 10 months. I have tried to keep my faith, but it was the support from so many that kept me going.

“I also want one thing to be very clear: I plan to play basketball this season for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury.”

In February, Phoenix Mercury, the all-star centre was stopped at Moscow’s airport after customs officers found vape cartridges containing cannabis oil in her luggage.

She pleaded guilty to using the cartridges to treat pain from sports injuries, and was sentenced for nine years.

Her legal team stated that she had been transferred from her home to one of Russia’s most notorious penal colonies. Former inmates described brutal beatings, torture and forced labor conditions.

Brittney Griner returns to the US

The Olympic gold medalist returned home last week with her family, including Cherelle.

Griner stated that she would use her platform for helping other Americans return from Russia. Griner included former US Marine Paul Whelan who is currently serving a 16 year sentence in a Russian penal colony.

Moscow and Washington were further divided by Griner’s arrest, with the US government arguing that Griner was unlawfully detained.

Campaigners widely condemned it, including Dennis Rodman, a former NBA star who claimed he planned to fly to Russia to try to get the US basketball player freed.
