A fire broke out near Lyon, France, killing ten people, five of them children, aged between 3 and 15.
Neighbors reported hearing “screams” and seeing one resident throw her child from the building to the people below. She then jumped to her death.
According to Gerald Darmanin, the fire broke out in Vaulx-en-Velin’s seven-storey residential block on Friday morning.
A total of 180 firefighters were present and a security perimeter was established.
Minister delegate for cities, housing Olivier Klein posted a photo of the scene on social media.
He said that the cause of the fire is unknown at this point.
“There are many scenarios, and a probe wird be opened,” said Mr Darmanin. He also stated that he was in contact with President Emmanuel Macron regarding the tragedy.
He continued, “I send my condolences and sympathies to the loved ones and families of the victims.”
Mohamed, a nearby resident, said to local media that he heard children and women screaming.
“I woke my wife up and told her that there was something very serious.”
Assed, Neighbor, stated: “It’s horrible to see. I was shocked.
“I saw a woman throw her child to others. They were able to catch him.
“She tried to jump. It didn’t go as planned. She died.”
Rida, another resident said that Rida had told Rida not to take her son to school. He was shocked and traumatized by hearing screams like this, screams full of horror. My legs are shaking.”
